This stretch of beach is bounded on the north by the Poche Storm Drain (under natural conditions, the Prima Desecha Canada Creek). The first beach south of the storm drain is the County-owned Poche Beach; south of Poche Beach lies the Shorecliffs Beach Club; south of that is undeveloped privately-owned land; and bounded at the south by the homes of Capistrano Shores.
Over 20 feet of beach width and almost 10 feet of vertical height has been eroded from this beach.
SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: The remaining sandy beach is composed of medium-grained sand, with an offshore cobble field and periodically-appearing cobble cusps. Over the past decade, the amount of cobble on the beach has gradually increased.
INFRASTRUCTURE: The Shorecliffs Beach Club has a clubhouse with amenities including sports courts. A 9/11 Memorial has been installed at the undeveloped property.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES: The Poche Storm Drain has had significant water quality issues in the past and these should be addressed. Stagnant, low-quality water often floods Poche Beach.
PUBLIC ACCESS: There is vertical public access at the north end via a catwalk along the Poche Storm Drain channel. The undeveloped property has no fencing; bench seating has been installed at the 9/11 Memorial.
SURF RESOURCES: Poche Reef lies just north of this section. (more details). The shoreline seaward of Poche Reef appears to have experienced lesser erosion than surrounding sections, as evidenced by a higher elevation (less vertical erosion) and a sandier shoreline.
