HOW CAN WE SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?
Sand replenishment is a crucial element of restoring our beaches. Sand can be acquired from a number of sources, and brought to our beaches via railcar, trucks and offshore harvesting and redistribution methods.
But won’t the ocean just wash away the new sand? Actually, our local coastline is a curved “bight” that will help us naturally retain replenished sand, but that’s not enough.
We need to explore additional nature-based solutions such as artificial reefs and small headlands that help break down wave action nearshore, retain more sand, and often create new surf breaks.
Many challenges face these endeavors, including permitting, funding, environmental analysis, bureaucratic red tape and other obstacles exist. Read further how you can help us clear these hurdles and save our beaches!
