Living Shorelines

Living shorelines are nature-based solutions designed to protect coastal infrastructure from erosion while also promoting biodiversity and ecological health. Unlike traditional hardened structures like seawalls, bulkheads, and revetments, living shorelines incorporate elements such as native vegetation, marshes, or oyster reefs to absorb wave energy and stabilize the shoreline.

There are innumerable variants on living shorelines, however in Southern California, the term has come to represent one particular version of the concept, which is a buried rock revetment fronted by a buried cobble berm, both covered with sand and over-planted with dune vegetation and shim fencing.
